Thank you....Facebook?????

There are those people who say "Facebook is stupid". Those are the people who do not have a Facebook page. There are those people who have a Facebook page and almost never check it or use it. There are those people who have a facebook page and check it only to comment on other people's status'. There are people who have Facebook and check it on a regular basis, but never comment on any one's status and never put a status up themselves. I have been all of these people at one point or another. Now? Now I am the person who appreciates Facebook and what it has given me.

I joined Facebook about 3 years ago. I only joined because my friend Downey told me I should. Before I knew it I had almost 300 friends. I really couldn't believe that all these people who I had lost track of where now within reach and I could catch up with them. So through Facebook I have been able to "rekindle" friendships. Friendships I either forgot about, or thought I had lost forever. Sometimes its the ones I forgot about that have come to mean the most. Yes, through Facebook, I have discovered great, meaningful friendships.

Then this week one of those friends passed away. A woman whom I have known since middle school, but lost touch with over the years. Then we became facebook friends about 2 years ago just to catch up. Eventually we became "insomniac buddies". I refer to those few people who always seem to be awake when I am, and who talk to me on Facebook at these hours, as my "Insomniac Buddies". So when my friend passed away this week, I was in shock. How can someone so young, and talented and beautiful be gone?

Now all I think about is how grateful I am that I was able to have her in my life, even for a short period, again. I owe some of my most important friendships to Facebook. This may sound weird and sick, but it's oh so true. It's so much easier to keep up with what is going on in every one's life when you have access to a social media network. Without Facebook I wouldn't be able to keep up with all of my friends, and that is part of the reason why we all lost touch over the years.

I guess I am just writing this blog because I can't believe how the Internet and computers and modern technology link us all in a crazy way. I can't believe that without Facebook I would not have been able to see what a great person my friend turned out to be.

I hope that all of my friends read this and know that I cherish each friendship now, as much as, if not more than, before. You know the old saying "if you love something let it go......."? Well I have let so many people go, it's the special few that have come back, that matter the most.

Just a thought...............

  1. Yes, Niki you HAVE been blessed with some very special friends. Hannah, Joni, Art, Sarah, Tamar,Erica, etc... I hope your friends hold you as close to their hearts as you do them. Friendship is sometimes harder to let go than LOVE. I had that kind of friend once. Well actually twice...Sharon and Ken. Both are gone now , Sharon is in heaven watching me and laughing at my screwups. Ken is playing house with some bimbo...Long story. I hope each of your special friends know how much they mean to me also. Just for being there for you.
